Social Media Club of Dallas hosts Chris Brogan

We attended the Social Media Club of Dallas’ first event of the year last night – and they sure opened with a bang! The guest speaker was Chris Brogan, president of New Marketing Labs, co-author of The New York Times bestselling book “Trust Agents” and rock star blogger.  

The event was held in a theater at the Angelika Film Center (@angelikafilmcen) in Mockingbird Station (@mockingbirdsta), which filled quickly with social media enthusiasts from all over the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Mike Merrill (@mikedmerrill), president of #smcdallas gave background information on the organization and its sponsors then introduced Chris Brogan (@chrisbrogan). At typical lectures people just sit and listen to the speaker, but since this organization focuses on social media and its practices, it is perfectly acceptable to tweet highlights and snap pictures on your phone throughout the event.

Here are some highlights:

  • We need to learn to network outside of our industry – this will help grow and strengthen our connections.
  • Marketing is two parts helping, two parts connecting and one part selling. Meaning 80 percent of our interactions need to be selfless and focused on others.
  • To get comments on your blog posts, make sure you’re creating content that is relatable and thought-provoking. Once they comment, be sure to interact with your readers.
  • Comment on blogs you read and link to them in your posts to build relationships and show appreciation other bloggers points of view.
  • Spend the majority of your time on Twitter listening and using the search function.
  • Don’t start using LinkedIn the day you get fired. Create a profile that makes sense and focuses on your future endeavors today.
  • Evaluate the best social media method for you. Not all companies will benefit from Facebook, and not everyone needs a Twitter page. Whatever you choose, make sure your page has a genuine purpose beyond self promotion.
  • We need to get new metrics. Your number of followers on Twitter or Facebook doesn’t matter. We need to focus on making quality connections with people and creating content that drives real actions.
  • Be sure to practice “seeing people.” Deepen your relationships online and offline. He recently wrote a blog post on this topic.

  1. Excellent recap. I’d forgotten his advice early on to stray from your vertical. It makes perfect sense; those outside of our industries are probably more likely to be a great resource in the future.

    I thought Chris’ presentation was good. I wish it had gone longer, but it certainly left me pondering all kinds of stuff afterwards. It was one of those presentations that you just feel so-so about while you’re experiencing it, but then later you find yourself thinking of it non-stop. And that’s a good thing.
