How many times have you heard about the importance of keyword research? As a digital marketer, I’m pretty sure not a week goes by that this doesn’t come up with a client or colleague.
For many years I was loyal to Google Keyword Planner (then known as Google Keyword Research Tool). I’m not sure why I was so loyal. Perhaps because it was just right there along my other Google tools, or because I was working on PPC campaigns and it was right there in AdWords, or maybe because it’s what I learned first. Once I started exploring other options, I was pleased to find a few free alternatives to Google Keyword Planner that are now part of my toolkit.
1. Keyword Eye: Keyword Eye generates a nice word cloud based on your keyword search. I don’t mind sorting through rows of data, but sometimes it’s nice to have a visual to easily see what bubbles to the top. This is also a great keyword research tool for beginners!
2. WordStream: WordStream has several research tools that are helpful. In addition to a keyword suggestion tool, there is also a tool that suggests negative keywords. If you’ve run PPC campaigns before, you know how important it is to have the right negative keywords.
3. Ubersuggest: Like the other tools, Ubersuggest is very simple to use. I like the feature that allows you to click on the term and drill down further. I find this tool most helpful when trying to refine a blog topic as it’s easy to eyeball related terms.
There are a number of tools out there. What’s your favorite free keyword research tool and why?
