This past Thursday, September 11, for the sixth consecutive year, Marketwave joined hundreds of other volunteers with Entrepreneurs For North Texas (EFNT) for the annual Freedom Day event. For the past 12 years, EFNT has brought the North Texas community together for an amazing day of service to honor the lives tragically lost and changed on September 11. From children’s retreats, to repairing and beautifying local schools, Freedom Day has transformed the heartbreak of September 11 into a day of community, service and commemoration.

This year, Marketwave was assigned to the Fisher House on the Dallas VA Medical Center Campus. Fisher House provides free temporary lodging for families of VA patients receiving health care at Dallas VA Medical Center. We spent several hours painting a rather large trellis.  While it was hard work, we had a great time as a team and shared many laughs throughout the project.

On my drive home that afternoon, I reflected on the day of service and what September 11 really means to me. While it certainly is a day in history I will never forget, it’s starting to take on a new meaning for me. I now think of it as Freedom Day: a day for reflection, hope and the opportunity to do something good in our community.

Did you or your company participate in a 9/11 service project this year?  We would love to hear what you did to commemorate this day.
