Spooktacular Brands: Top 3 Halloween Ad Campaigns

Posted by on October 27, 2014

This week’s guest post comes from Marketwave’s client services’ intern, Ruby Camarillo.                               Halloween is a great time to show off your creativity with a fun and unique costume, but what if your brand wants to join in on the fun? Incorporating the season’s spooky feel into a campaign without detracting from the brand’s identity can be kind of tricky, to say the least. Check out our favorite Halloween campaigns from brands that found the perfect balance of branding and seasonal fun.

Ikea Singapore

Taking inspiration from the Stanley Kubrick’s cult classic horror film The Shining, Ikea Singapore recreated the infamous Big Wheel scene inside one of their stores to promote Ikea’s late-night shopping. Ikea’s signature room displays are filled with haunting references to the film, some of our favorites being the bloody “red rug” wall, the bathroom ghost and the abandoned parlor. The ad – like the original scene – ends in a horrifying encounter with the eerie Grady twins and a clever spin on their iconic lines.

Progressive Insurance

Over the last few years, Flo, “The Insurance Lady” from Progressive Insurance’s commercials, has become a fan favorite for her upbeat personality and witty insurance-selling techniques. This year, in addition to an official Flo costume they rolled out a few years ago, Progressive has made printable Flo accessories available on their website. The company has also teamed up with YouTube superstar Kandee Johnson to provide a Flo inspired hair and makeup tutorial. We love how instead of infusing their brand with the typical Halloween scare factor they’ve made Flo a fun – and, thanks to the printouts, easy – Halloween pop-culture costume.

Snickers

Halloween and candy go hand–in-hand, so it’s only natural Snickers would get in on the holiday festivities. Playing on their campaign “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry,” Snickers swapped the cranky celebrities in their commercials for angry monsters in need of a hunger-busting Snickers bar. The ads stay true to their brand identity while subtly reminding us that Snickers are an essential Halloween candy and giving us a bit of Halloween horror.
